Kenya Nyeri

Kenya Nyeri is the actual county behind many top Kenya AA lots: real altitude, soil, and variety data, not just the size grade printed on the bag.

Scale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of washed Nyeri lots from three different cooperatives/factories; two of the three carry an explicit size grade in their own review titles (AA and AB respectively) and the third carries none, underscoring that Nyeri's reputation is tied to place and processing, not one bean-size grade. Per-attribute scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest 0.5. Not a category-wide statistical sample: individual lots vary, and all three cited lots score in Coffee Review's mid-90s, the high end of what any Kenyan origin can produce, not a typical cup.

What it tastes like

“Kenya AA” is a screen size; Nyeri is an actual place, and that distinction matters more here than almost anywhere else in the Atlas. Trabocca’s own grading breakdown confirms AA, AB, and PB are sorted purely by bean size and shape, not cup quality, which is exactly what the three highest-scoring Nyeri lots in this entry show: Roadmap CoffeeWorks’ AA-grade lot scores 96, Shuang Yi’s AB-grade lot scores 95, and a third 95-point lot from Gikanda Cooperative carries no size grade in its own Coffee Review listing at all. What they share isn’t a common grade, it’s a county.

Nyeri sits on the south-western slopes of Mount Kenya and the eastern flank of the Aberdare Range, red volcanic loam soil and two distinct rainy seasons feeding a main crop harvested October through December and a smaller fly crop from May to July. Sucafina’s own Nyeri Hill Farm listing puts the growing elevation at 1,600 to 2,200 meters, and Roadmap CoffeeWorks’ current Kiamabara-factory lot, also in Nyeri, independently lists 1,900 masl, comfortably inside that band. Trees there are almost entirely SL28, SL34, and the newer disease-resistant Ruiru 11 and Batian, descendants of Scott Agricultural Laboratories’ 1930s selection work, then processed through Kenya’s traditional double wash: pulped, fermented, and soaked again in clean water before drying on raised beds.

That combination of altitude, volcanic soil, and washing-station discipline is what shows up in the cup. The three cited Coffee Review lots, from Gikanda Cooperative, Kiamabara-area smallholders, and other Nyeri-region growers, all lean black currant and dark chocolate, with pomegranate, candied violet, and a sage-like herbal edge threading through a syrupy, high-acid structure. It is a more specific, more consistent signature than “Kenya AA” alone can promise, since AA only guarantees bean size, not which of Kenya’s dozens of counties it grew in.

How to brew it

Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention

Best fit
Pour-over
Recommended

Filtered clarity lets Nyeri's black-currant acidity and floral top notes come through cleanly, the profile all three cited reviews describe as bright and layered.

Espresso
Workable

Fruit-forward Nyeri lots pull well as single-origin shots, but roasters note the high acidity needs a shorter, hotter dial-in than lower-altitude beans to avoid sourness.

French press
Workable

Full immersion adds body but softens the sharp, wine-like acidity that is the main reason drinkers seek out this specific county.

Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for high-acidity washed Kenyan lots, not an SCA-defined standard; consistent with this site's Kenya AA entry.

Nyeri's 1,600-2,200 m range is sourced directly from Sucafina's Nyeri Hill Farm origin page and cross-checked against Roadmap CoffeeWorks' Kiamabara factory listing (see Sources & data). Kenya AA, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using the same typical origin bands already published elsewhere on this site, not lot-specific measurements.

~1.2% caffeine by dry weight
2.2%

~2.2% caffeine by dry weight

Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: roughly 1.5% for Arabica versus roughly 2.7% for Robusta, nearly double (see Sources & data). This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-county caffeine figure exists either, so Nyeri is not higher in caffeine than any other Kenyan county despite its altitude and reputation, and the comparison above is by species only, not a measurement of this specific lot.
