Kenya Kirinyaga
Kenya Kirinyaga sits beside Nyeri on Mount Kenya's slopes, but 14 cooperatives and 74 wet mills mean the name covers far more than one flavor.
Flavor profile
avg. of 3 published reviewsScale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of washed Kirinyaga lots, each explicitly grown in Kirinyaga District; two of the three were processed at the same Kii Factory. Per-attribute scores are averaged and rounded to the nearest 0.5. Not a category-wide statistical sample: individual lots vary, and all three cited lots score in Coffee Review's mid-90s, near the top of what any Kenyan county can produce, not a typical cup. A fourth widely indexed Kirinyaga-labeled review, Equator Coffees' Kenya Mount Kirinyaga, was deliberately excluded: the roaster's own product page discloses the lot is a Nyeri-and-Kirinyaga smallholder blend sourced via Taylor Winch, not a Kirinyaga-only lot, so including it would have misrepresented this entry's county-specific scope.
What it tastes like
Kirinyaga sits on Mount Kenya’s southern slopes, right next door to Nyeri, and shares the same central-highland reputation for black-currant acidity and washed clarity. But the county name hides more structure than it reveals: Kirinyaga’s own 2025/26 reporting counts 14 coffee cooperative societies operating 74 individual factories, the wet mills that actually process each day’s cherry. A bag stamped simply “Kirinyaga” could have come from any one of them, and the ones that show up on cupping tables, Kii, Kiangoi, and Karimikui (all under Rungeto FCS), Gakuyuini (Thirikwa FCS), and Kiamugumo (New Ngariama FCS) among them, are named, physically distinct washing stations, not interchangeable stand-ins for the county.
Two of the three lots cited below were processed at Kii Factory, one of Rungeto’s stations alongside Kiangoi and Karimikui; Kii alone serves more than 850 smallholders at 1,310 to 1,900 meters, per Sucafina’s own Kii Kirinyaga offering page, a figure that independently matches Iburu Coffee’s county-wide altitude band exactly. Nearby Konyu, run by the separate Kabare Society (roughly 14,000 members across ten factories), and Rungeto’s own Kiangoi (950 members) round out the picture: SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, and Batian trees, cherry picked and pulped within a day, fermented, then soaked and rewashed before drying on raised beds, the same double-wash discipline used across Kenya’s other top counties.
The cup itself splits the difference between bright and savory. All three cited Coffee Review lots lean red currant, and two of the three, both from Kii Factory, add a distinctly savory ripe-tomato and umami note alongside the more familiar dark chocolate, magnolia, and citrus, a deeper, more sweetly savory register than the brighter, more purely fruit-forward lots this site’s Nyeri and Kenya AA entries cite. All three score in the mid-90s, the high end of what any Kenyan county produces, not a typical cup.
None of this means Kirinyaga owns one fixed flavor the way a single estate might. As one origin guide covering both counties puts it, Nyeri and Kirinyaga can each “produce bright, fruit-forward washed coffee,” and “neither county owns one fixed flavor,” since the real cup depends on the specific factory, crop, and process behind the name, not the county printed on the bag.
How to brew it
Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention
Filtered clarity lets the red-currant acidity and savory cocoa-and-tomato depth in these Kii Factory lots come through cleanly, the method most Kenyan-origin roasters recommend first.
Fruit-forward, high-acid Kirinyaga lots pull as single-origin shots, but roasters note the same juicy acidity needs a shorter, hotter dial-in than lower-altitude beans to avoid sourness.
Full immersion adds body but mutes the sharp currant acidity and savory edge that set these factory lots apart from a flatter, generic cup.
⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for high-acidity washed Kenyan lots, not an SCA-defined standard; consistent with this site's Kenya AA and Kenya Nyeri entries.
Altitude & region
Growing elevation, meters above sea level · this entry vs comparison bands
Kirinyaga's 1,310-1,900 m range is sourced directly from Sucafina's Kii Kirinyaga AA offering page and independently matches Iburu Coffee's county-level Kirinyaga figure exactly (see Sources & data). Kenya Nyeri, Kenya AA, and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using the same typical origin bands already published elsewhere on this site, not lot-specific measurements.
Caffeine content
Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%
Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: roughly 1.5% for Arabica versus roughly 2.7% for Robusta, nearly double (see Sources & data). This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-county caffeine figure exists either, so Kirinyaga is not higher in caffeine than Nyeri or any other Kenyan county despite its altitude and cooperative-system reputation, and the comparison above is by species only, not a measurement of this specific lot.
