Kenya Kiambu
Kenya Kiambu, the washed SL28 coffee grown on Nairobi's doorstep, with sourced altitude and harvest data plus averaged Coffee Review cupping scores.
Flavor profile
avg. of 3 published reviewsScale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of Kiambu lots from three different roasters (93, 94 and 95 points, reviewed in 2018, 2021 and 2023). Coffee Review publishes whole-number attribute scores, so per-attribute means are rounded to the nearest 0.5. Not a category-wide statistical sample: these are three roaster-selected lots reviewed years apart, and individual Kiambu lots will score higher or lower.
What it tastes like
Kiambu is the Kenyan county that sits against Nairobi’s northern edge, and its coffee has a reputation for the classic Kenyan profile: red currant, juicy acidity, and a savory, almost umami backbone rather than pure sweetness. All three cited Coffee Review lots name red currant, and two add cedar, which is an unusually consistent signal across three roasters in two countries, reviewed across several years.
Its growing conditions are well documented at the estate level. Sucafina’s Mukunga Kiambu AA page puts that estate at 1,850 to 1,880 meters on red volcanic soil, with roughly 90% SL28 and the rest Ruiru 11, harvested in two seasons and washed, then dried on raised beds. SL28 is the same Scott Agricultural Laboratories selection behind much of Kenya’s reputation, and the JH Roaster lot cited here is SL28 and SL34.
What distinguishes Kiambu from its better-known neighbor Nyeri is mostly proximity and scale: it sits beside the capital’s mills and exporters, so lots vary widely by factory. Treat the three reviews here (93 to 95 points) as a picture of what good Kiambu lots can do, not a guarantee for any bag labeled with the county.
How to brew it
Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention
Filtered clarity keeps the red-currant acidity and floral top notes the three cited reviews describe distinct rather than muddied.
Juicy, high-acid Kenyan lots can pull well as single-origin shots, but roasters generally advise a careful dial-in to avoid sourness.
Immersion adds the syrupy body reviewers mention, but softens the crisp, structured acidity that is the reason to buy a Kenyan lot.
⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for high-acidity washed Kenyan lots, not an SCA-defined standard; consistent with this site's other Kenya entries.
Altitude & region
Growing elevation, meters above sea level · this entry vs comparison bands
Kiambu's 1,800-1,880 m band covers only the two lots described in the provenance note above, not the whole county. The Kenya AA entry on this site cites a broader county-wide Kiambu range of 1,520-2,200 m (Iburu Coffee's regional breakdown), which is the better guide to the county overall; individual factories vary. Kenya AA, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using the typical origin bands already published elsewhere on this site, not lot-specific measurements.
Caffeine content
Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%
Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica (see Sources & data). This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-county caffeine figure exists, so Kiambu is not higher or lower in caffeine than any other Kenyan county, and the comparison above is by species only, not a measurement of this specific lot.
