BaratzaVirtuoso+.

The verdict in one line: Baratza's own suggested settings place Hario V60 at grind 15 and French Press at 28 on the Virtuoso+'s 40 step dial, matching both of our brew guides directly, with one gap: the grinder doses by time, not weight, so our guides' gram targets still need a separate scale.

Two distinct grind targets: medium and medium-coarse
40 stepped settings run grind setting 1 (fine) to 40 (very coarse); Baratza's own chart places Hario V60 at 15 and French Press at 28, a 13-step gap on the dialassets.breville.com
Both guides list a digital scale as required gear and dose and yield by weight: pour-over runs 15g coffee to 250g water, French press runs 22.5g coffee to 400g water, per each guide's own scaler
15g pour-over dose, 22.5g French press dose, both weighed on a scale each guide lists as required gear
The Virtuoso+ grinds for a predetermined length of time, shown on the display in seconds; the dial sets grind time, not grind weight, and no weight-based dosing feature is described in the operations manualassets.breville.com
Grounds bin must hold the guides' largest single dose, French press's 22.5g, without overflow

Plain speech

Buy it, or don't.

For you if

  • You brew with our pour-over (V60) and French press guides and want Baratza's own dialed-in starting points, 15 and 28, instead of hunting across all 40 settings
  • You already own a scale and are comfortable pulsing the grinder onto it to hit a target weight rather than relying on a built-in dose-by-weight feature
  • You want a wide gap between your two grind settings, 15 to 28, so switching between guides doesn't mean nudging the dial by one or two clicks

Not for you if

  • You want a grinder with a built-in scale or an automatic dose-by-weight stop
  • You're comparing bean hopper capacity closely: Seattle Coffee Gear's listing states 8 ounces while Sur La Table's listing states 10.6 ounces for the same grinder, and Baratza's own materials don't publish a hopper figure to settle it
  • You need espresso-range grinding day to day: this dossier only checks pour-over and French press, the two methods on this product's own method list

Questions, answered plainly

FAQ.

The Virtuoso+’s dial runs 40 stepped settings, fine at 1 and coarse at 40, and Baratza’s own operations manual lists a suggested starting point for six methods. Two of those six are exactly the methods on this product’s own list: Hario V60 at grind 15 and French Press at 28, a 13-step gap on the same dial. Our pour-over guide calls for a medium grind on a V60, and our French press guide calls for medium-coarse, so both of Baratza’s suggested settings land where our own guides already point.

Where the Virtuoso+ comes up short is dosing. The manual is explicit: the grinder runs for a length of time, shown on the display in seconds, adjustable in 1.0 second steps clockwise or 0.1 second steps counterclockwise, 0.1 to 40.0 seconds total. That is a time-based dial, not a weight-based one. Our guides weigh every dose, 15g for pour-over and 22.5g for French press, and both list a digital scale as required gear regardless of grinder. Pulse mode, holding the dial down to grind continuously, lets you work around that by grinding straight onto a scale until it hits the target weight, but that is still an external scale doing the weighing, not the grinder.

A few specs came back inconsistent across retailers. Seattle Coffee Gear’s own listing states a 38mm burr and an 8 ounce hopper; Sur La Table’s listing states 40mm and 10.6 ounces for the same grinder. Baratza’s own product page and manual don’t publish either figure, so there’s no manufacturer number to settle either disagreement, and both retailer numbers are reported here as stated rather than blended into one.

FAQ

Does the Virtuoso+ actually cover both pour-over and French press on one dial?

Yes, directly. Baratza’s own suggested settings table names Hario V60 (grind 15) and French Press (grind 28) among its six listed methods, and those are the two methods on this product’s own method list. The 13-step gap between them is wide enough that dialing in one guide won’t leave you a click or two from the other.

Do I still need a separate scale?

Yes. The Virtuoso+’s dial sets grind time in seconds, not grind weight, and the operations manual describes no built-in scale or weight-based dosing feature. Our pour-over and French press guides both list a digital scale as required gear and weigh every dose (15g and 22.5g), so a scale is part of the kit either way; pulse mode just lets you grind straight onto one instead of guessing a time-to-weight conversion.

How big is the burr, and how much does the hopper hold?

Retailers disagree. Seattle Coffee Gear’s listing states a 38mm burr and an 8 ounce bean hopper; Sur La Table’s listing states 40mm and 10.6 ounces. Baratza’s own product page and manual don’t state either number, so this dossier reports both retailer figures rather than picking one.

What’s the grind timer’s actual range?

0.1 to 40.0 seconds, per Baratza’s manual. The dial increases grind time in 1.0 second steps turning clockwise and decreases it in 0.1 second steps turning counterclockwise, and it loops back to 1.0 or 40.0 seconds at either end rather than stopping.

What’s the warranty?

1 year from the original date of purchase in the US and Canada, covering parts and labor with free ground transportation to and from Baratza’s repair facility, per the operations manual. Grinders purchased in the US or Canada and shipped outside those countries carry a one-year parts-only warranty instead.
