Tanzania Ruvuma
Tanzania Ruvuma coffee from Mbinga in the far southwest: washed Bourbon-type Arabica at 1,200-1,800 m, with a sourced cupping profile and where to buy.
Flavor profile
avg. of 3 published reviewsScale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of lots from the Ruvuma growing region: Tanzanian Songea Peaberry, Fratello Coffee Roasters (May 2010), Tanzania Ruvuma, The Roasterie (Aug 2010), and Tanzania Ruvuma, Lexington Coffee Roasters (Apr 2013). All three are medium-dark roasts, one is a peaberry, and they are 13 to 16 years old. Not a category-wide statistical sample: individual lots, roasts, and harvests vary.
What it tastes like
Ruvuma is Tanzania’s far-southwest corner, bordering Mozambique and Lake Nyasa, and most of its coffee comes from Mbinga District. A Royal Coffee Mbinga lot lists 1,200 to 1,800 meters, N5 and N39 Bourbon selections, and a washed process with a two to three day ferment and raised-bed drying. Harvest dates differ by source: Cafe Imports gives May to September for the south, while that lot lists September to February.
The three Coffee Review lots behind this entry score high and consistently: acidity and flavor both average 9. The notes lean toward black currant, citrus, and stone fruit (apricot and peach in one, grapefruit and pineapple in another) over honey, flowers, and a chocolate or cacao nib finish. Body is described as syrupy, silky, or velvety, which sets Ruvuma apart from the leaner profile many readers expect of East Africa.
Read the average with care: all three are medium-dark roasts from 2010 to 2013, one is a peaberry, and a fresh, lighter-roasted lot may taste brighter and less chocolatey.
How to brew it
Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention
Filtered brewing keeps the bright stone-fruit and citrus acidity the reviews describe clear and separate from the chocolate finish.
The syrupy to velvety body the reviews note carries well in immersion, though some of the lift is softened.
Big acidity and sweet fruit can suit a medium to medium-dark espresso roast, as the cited roasts were, but bright lots need careful dialling in.
⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for washed East African lots, not an SCA-defined standard.
Altitude & region
Growing elevation, meters above sea level · this entry vs comparison bands
The 1,200-1,800 m band is sourced from Royal Coffee's Mbinga lot listing and Genuine Origin's Southern Highlands figure (see Sources & data). Tanzania Kilimanjaro uses the figure already on this site's Kilimanjaro entry; Kenya AA and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using commonly published bands, not lot-specific measurements.
Caffeine content
Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%
Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: roughly 1.1% for Arabica versus roughly 2.1% for Robusta in one published green-bean study, close to double (see Sources & data). This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-origin caffeine figure exists at a category level, so the comparison is by species only, not a measurement of any specific lot.
