Tanzania Mbeya
Tanzania Mbeya coffee from the Southern Highlands: washed Bourbon-type Arabica with sourced altitude band, harvest window, and cupping profile, and sources.
Flavor profile
avg. of 3 published reviewsScale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of lots located in Mbeya: East Fourteenth, Red Bay Coffee (2020, darker roast), Mutwari Tanzania Peaberry, Cafe Grumpy (2015, peaberry), and Tanzania Mpito, Kean Coffee (2012). Not a category-wide statistical sample: the lots span different years, roast levels, and grades, and individual lots vary.
What it tastes like
Mbeya sits in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, near the Malawi border, a very different zone from the Kilimanjaro slopes in the north. Per Genuine Origin’s Tanzania report, the highlands here run roughly 1,200 to 1,800 meters, and the southern harvest comes earlier than the north’s, from May to September according to Cafe Imports. Lots are typically washed Bourbon-type Arabica.
The three Coffee Review lots behind this entry agree on a sweeter, heavier cup than Tanzania’s northern reputation suggests. Body is the standout: two of the three score it a 9, described as creamy to syrupy. Fruit runs from blood orange and Concord grape in the Cafe Grumpy peaberry to plum-like fruit in Kean’s Mpito, over molasses, cocoa, and dark chocolate.
Acidity stays round rather than sharp. One review calls it gentle, another richly tart and juicy, and Genuine Origin singles out Mbeya’s citric acidity. Read the average with care: it mixes a darker roast, a peaberry, and two standard lots across eight years, so a single bag can sit well to either side.
How to brew it
Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention
Filtered brewing keeps the citric acidity and floral top notes the reviews describe clear and separate from the heavier sweetness.
The creamy to syrupy body the reviews note carries well in full immersion, though some brightness is softened.
Round acidity and heavy body suit a medium to darker espresso roast, as one cited review shows, but lighter lots need careful dialling in.
⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for washed East African lots, not an SCA-defined standard.
Altitude & region
Growing elevation, meters above sea level · this entry vs comparison bands
The 1,200-1,800 m band is sourced from Genuine Origin's Southern Highlands figure (see Sources & data) and covers more than Mbeya. Tanzania Kilimanjaro uses the figure already on this site's Kilimanjaro entry; Kenya AA and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using commonly published bands, not lot-specific measurements.
Caffeine content
Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%
Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: roughly 1.1% for Arabica versus roughly 2.1% for Robusta in one published green-bean study, close to double (see Sources & data). This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-origin caffeine figure exists at a category level, so the comparison is by species only, not a measurement of any specific lot.
