Ethiopia Bensa
Ethiopia Bensa, the high-altitude Sidama district behind both washed and natural lots, with a flavor profile averaged from three Coffee Review scores.
Flavor profile
avg. of 3 published reviewsScale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of Sidama Bensa lots: one washed (Bargain Cafe, Sept 2024) and two natural (Taster's Coffee, Feb 2025; 1980 CAFE, Oct 2025). All three were scored 94 and were roasted by Taiwanese roasters, so this is a small, narrow sample, not a district-wide statistic. Washed and natural lots are blended into one profile here, and individual lots vary.
What it tastes like
Bensa is a district in the Sidama highlands that has become a name in its own right on specialty menus, sold in both washed and natural form. The two styles diverge: washed lots lean jasmine and apricot with a silky body, while naturals go for blueberry jam and a deeper, cocoa-sweet finish.
All three cited Coffee Review lots scored 94 and share a full body (9 in every case), with acidity the lowest-scoring attribute at 8 to 9. That points to a cup defined by sweetness and mouthfeel more than by a sharp acid snap.
The sample is narrow: three lots, all reviewed from Taiwanese roasters, two of them natural. Treat the profile as a sketch of what top-scoring Bensa can taste like, not a promise for any bag.
How to brew it
Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention
Filtered clarity suits the floral and stone-fruit character of washed Bensa lots and keeps natural lots' berry notes distinct.
Dense high-altitude beans can taste sharp if under-extracted, so natural lots tend to be easier to dial in than washed ones.
Adds body to a cup that is already full, but immersion softens the delicate floral top notes.
⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for Ethiopian washed and natural lots, not an SCA-defined standard.
Altitude & region
Growing elevation, meters above sea level · this entry vs comparison bands
Ethiopia Bensa's 1,900-2,330 m band is sourced from a single Royal Coffee Bensa lot listing (medium confidence, see Sources & data). The wider Sidamo range comes from Ethio Coffee. Kenya AA and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using commonly published bands already used elsewhere on this site, not lot-specific measurements.
Caffeine content
Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%
Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: Robusta beans contain substantially more caffeine than Arabica. This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-origin caffeine figure exists at a category level.
