WacacoNanopresso.

The verdict in one line: Wacaco's own spec sheet lists an 18 bar peak pressure, comfortably past our espresso guide's 9 bar requirement, and its published brew water range matches our guide's window almost exactly, but its 8g fixed basket, 16g only with the separate Barista Kit, falls short of our guide's 18 to 19g dose, and the base box ships without a grinder, a scale, a tamper, or a bottomless or spouted portafilter.

Plain speech

Buy it, or don't.

For you if

  • You want a hand-pumped device that clears our espresso guide's 9 bar requirement by a wide margin. Wacaco's own spec sheet lists an 18 bar peak pressure with no battery or outlet needed.
  • You're fine brewing single 8g doses, or buying the separate Barista Kit for its 16g baskets, rather than hitting our guide's 18 to 19g range in the stock basket.
  • You already own a grinder, a scale, and a tamper, or don't mind tamping by hand, since Wacaco's own box contents list for the base unit has none of the three.
  • You're set up to heat water separately, kettle or camp stove, since Wacaco's own guide states the Nanopresso does not heat water itself.

Not for you if

  • You want to hit our guide's 18 to 19g dose in the stock basket. Wacaco's own spec caps it at 8g, 16g only with the separate Barista Kit.
  • You want to watch the shot pull through a bottomless or spouted portafilter. Wacaco's own FAQ describes a pressurised head system for the basket instead.
  • You want a tamper or a grinder in the box. Wacaco's own contents list for the base Nanopresso has neither; the tamper ships only in the separate Barista Kit.
  • You want a device that heats its own water. Wacaco's own guide states hot water has to be added before brewing.

Questions, answered plainly

FAQ.

Wacaco builds the Nanopresso around a hand pump instead of an electric one, and on pressure alone it clears our espresso guide’s 9 bar requirement by a wide margin. Wacaco’s own product page lists a max. pressure of 18 bar (261 PSI), double the guide’s floor, built up by pumping a lever rather than running a motor. The device needs no battery and no outlet: water is boiled separately and poured in by hand, since Wacaco states the Nanopresso does not heat water itself.

Dose is where the two part ways. Wacaco’s own spec lists an 8g ground coffee capacity in the stock basket, 16g with the separate Nanopresso Barista Kit, short of our guide’s 18 to 19g range either way. That Barista Kit is also where the tamper lives: Wacaco lists one tamper among the kit’s contents, but the base Nanopresso box, the machine, built-in cup, filter basket, scoop, brush, cloth pouch, instruction book, warranty card, and two stickers, ships without one, and without a grinder or a scale.

Water temperature is where the two line up closely. Wacaco’s own brewing guide states the ideal range as 195F to 205F, close to our guide’s roughly 90 to 96C (195 to 205F) window. Grind runs finer than our guide’s baseline, though: Wacaco recommends an extra-fine grind against our guide’s fine, close to caster sugar setting. The basket shape differs too. Wacaco’s own FAQ states the Nanopresso uses a pressurised head system for its basket, not the bottomless or spouted style our guide’s gear list assumes, the kind that lets a shot be watched as it runs.

FAQ

Does the Nanopresso reach real espresso pressure?

Yes. Wacaco’s own product page lists a max. pressure of 18 bar (261 PSI) for the Nanopresso’s hand pump, well past the 9 bar our espresso guide’s gear list calls for in an espresso machine.

Can I dose the full 18 to 19g our guide calls for?

No, not in the stock basket. Wacaco’s own spec lists an 8g ground coffee capacity, and even the separate Nanopresso Barista Kit’s larger baskets cap out at 16g, short of our guide’s 18 to 19g range.

Does the Nanopresso come with a tamper or a grinder?

No. Wacaco’s own box contents list for the base Nanopresso, the machine, built-in cup, filter basket, scoop, brush, cloth pouch, instruction book, warranty card, and two stickers, includes neither. A tamper ships only inside the separate Barista Kit accessory, and no version includes a grinder.

Does the Nanopresso heat its own water?

No. Wacaco’s own product page states the Nanopresso does not heat water and must be filled with hot water before brewing, and Wacaco’s own brewing guide recommends a 195F to 205F range, close to our espresso guide’s roughly 90 to 96C (195 to 205F) window.

What grind size does the Nanopresso need?

Wacaco’s own product page recommends an extra-fine grind, one step finer than our espresso guide’s fine, close to caster sugar setting, so a stock espresso grind may need adjusting finer for the Nanopresso specifically.
