BrevilleBarista Express.
The verdict in one line: Breville's own spec sheet clears our espresso guide's 9 bar pump requirement and bundles a matched 54mm tamper and an on demand conical burr grinder, but that grinder runs 16 fixed settings rather than stepless, the shot buttons are volumetric rather than weight based, and the box ships without the 0.1g scale our guide's gear list calls for separately.

For you if
- You want a single box that clears our espresso guide's 9 bar pump requirement and includes an on demand conical burr grinder, so you're not sourcing a separate grinder to get started.
- You're fine dosing at 18g, the low end of our guide's 18 to 19g range, with a tamper that Breville ships already matched to the machine's 54mm portafilter.
- You don't need the shot to stop itself at a weighed target: Breville's own spec describes volumetric 1 and 2 shot buttons with manual over-ride, and you're comfortable watching a scale yourself to hit 36 to 38g.
- You want the water already at temperature: Breville's Thermocoil system with PID control runs at 200°F, inside the 90 to 96°C (195 to 205°F) window our guide's FAQ cites.
Not for you if
- You specifically want a stepless grinder: Breville's own spec lists 16 fixed grind settings with manual over-ride, not a stepless adjustment, and our espresso guide's gear list prefers stepless.
- You want the built-in buttons to cut the shot at your target weight: Breville describes them as volumetric shot control, not weight based, so hitting our guide's 36 to 38g out target means overriding the presets and watching a scale.
- You don't want to buy a separate scale: our guide's gear list calls for a 0.1g digital scale regardless of machine, and Breville's own accessories list for the BES870 does not include one.
- You need the confirmed top of our 18 to 19g dose range: Breville publishes only an 18g 'ideal dose' figure, not a stated 19g option.

Questions, answered plainly
FAQ.
Breville builds the Barista Express around a single 54mm portafilter and an integrated grinder, so the dose-to-cup path our espresso guide describes runs through one machine instead of a separate grinder and scale. On pressure, Breville’s own spec sheet states a 15 bar Italian pump delivering 9 bar of extraction pressure, clearing our guide’s 9 bar requirement outright, and the machine ships with a manual removable tamper matched to that same 54mm basket.
The integrated grinder is where the guide’s preferences and Breville’s spec sheet part ways. Breville states 16 grind settings with “adjustable grind amount and manual over-ride,” a fixed click adjustment, not the stepless grinder our guide’s gear list prefers. Dose is listed as an “ideal dose” of 18g, the low end of our 18 to 19g range, with no published 19g figure. The shot buttons themselves are volumetric, “choose between 1 & 2 shot, or manual control,” per Breville’s own wording, so cutting a shot at our guide’s 36 to 38g by-weight target means watching a scale and stopping the shot by hand rather than trusting the preset.
Temperature is a clean match: Breville’s Thermocoil heating system with PID control runs water at 200°F, inside the 90 to 96°C (195 to 205°F) window our guide’s FAQ cites for espresso machines generally. What the box does not include is a scale. Breville’s own accessories list for the BES870, down to the cleaning brush and Allen key, has no scale on it, so our guide’s separate 0.1g digital scale requirement still applies no matter which machine is under the portafilter.
FAQ
Does the Barista Express include a grinder?
Yes. Breville’s own spec sheet lists an integrated precision conical burr grinder with 16 grind settings, built into the machine rather than sold separately. It is a fixed click adjustment, though, not the stepless grinder our espresso guide’s gear list prefers.
Can I dose the full 18 to 19g our guide calls for?
Breville states the dose as “the ideal dose of 18g of freshly ground beans,” matching the low end of our guide’s 18 to 19g range. Breville does not publish a separate figure for a 19g dose, so the top of that range, Square Mile’s recipe, is not confirmed by the manufacturer’s own numbers.
Do the shot buttons stop at 36 to 38g automatically?
No. Breville describes the interface as volumetric shot control, choosing between 1 and 2 shot presets or manual over-ride, not a weight-based cutoff. Hitting our guide’s 36 to 38g out target means watching a scale and cutting the shot yourself rather than relying on the buttons.
Does the Barista Express come with a scale?
No. Breville’s own accessories list for the BES870, the Dosing Funnel attachment, Razor Dose Trimming Tool, 54mm portafilter, filter baskets, coffee scoop, integrated tamper, milk jug, cleaning disc and tablets, cleaning brush, tool and Allen key, and a water filter holder with filter, does not include one. Our espresso guide’s gear list calls for a digital scale with 0.1g resolution regardless of machine, so that stays an outside purchase.
What is the water tank and bean hopper capacity?
Breville’s own spec sheet lists a 67 ounce water tank and a 1/2 lb bean hopper, both corroborated by Seattle Coffee Gear’s listing (Reservoir Size, 67 ounces).
