Scale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 2 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of washed Rwanda Rulindo Tumba lots from one roaster (Big Creek Coffee Roasters, March 2019 and June 2021). Both lots come from the same washing station, so this is a read on Tumba, not a statistical sample of the whole district, and individual lots vary by harvest. The 2019 lot scored 91 overall and the 2021 lot 94.

What it tastes like

Rulindo sits in Rwanda’s Northern Province, and its washing stations work at some of the higher elevations in the country’s Bourbon belt. Cup of Excellence listings for FAKCO and SACOF Rulindo both place the station at 1,794 m with cherries arriving from 1,700 to 2,100 m, a band that runs a little higher than the national figure used elsewhere on this site. Harvest begins in March, and per Rwanda’s export board some Northern Province areas are still picking until August.

The cup is easiest to read through the Tumba washing station, which Coffee Review has scored twice. The 2019 lot scored 91 and the 2021 lot scored 94, both from the same roaster. The notes lean floral and sweet: rhododendron or narcissus, berry and tangerine, with cocoa nib, oak and a savory thread of thyme in one and date in the other.

What separates Rulindo from the Rwandan lots that read as pure fruit is that savory-sweet edge. Reviewers describe gentle, rounded acidity and a velvety or syrupy mouthfeel rather than a sharp, citric snap, so it suits drinkers who find Kenyan or Ethiopian lots too bright. Two lots from one station is a small sample, so treat this as a portrait of Tumba, not a promise for every Rulindo bag.

How to brew it

Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention

Best fit
Pour-over
Recommended

Filtered brewing keeps the floral and citrus top notes both reviews describe distinct from the sweeter, savory middle.

French press
Workable

The velvety, syrupy mouthfeel reviewers describe carries well in immersion, though some of the citrus brightness softens.

Espresso
Workable

Sweetness and body suit espresso, and some roasters sell Rulindo Tumba as a dedicated espresso, but dialling in for gentle acidity takes care.

⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for washed East African Bourbon lots, the same convention used on this site for Rwanda Huye and Rwanda Bourbon, not an SCA-defined standard.

Rulindo's range is sourced directly from the Cup of Excellence listings for the FAKCO and SACOF Rulindo washing stations (see Sources & data).
