Scale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of Nueva Segovia lots: Nicaragua Santa Teresa (Cafe Grumpy, August 2011, 90 points, Caturra and Yellow Catuai), Nicaragua Mozonte 'Elephant Bean' Natural (Giv Coffee, November 2014, 92 points, Maracaturra, natural) and Nicaragua Un Regalo de Dios Bourbon (Giv Coffee, October 2017, 94 points, Bourbon, washed). The three span 6 years, two processes and different varieties, and two come from the same roaster, so this describes the range of what published lots reach, not a typical cup. Coffee Review labels the acidity attribute Acidity/Structure in the 2017 review. Small-N, lot-level average; individual lots vary widely by farm, variety and process.

What it tastes like

Nueva Segovia is Nicaragua’s northern border department, and Perfect Daily Grind quotes altitudes above 1,500 meters there. One Mozonte farm lists 1,350 to 1,800 meters, so any single altitude figure for the department is indicative at best.

The published reviews show a range rather than one house style. The 2017 Bourbon from Un Regalo de Dios, washed, scored 94 with strawberry, almond, cocoa powder and narcissus-like flowers over a velvety, lively mouthfeel. A 2014 Maracaturra natural from the same farm leaned orange, baker’s chocolate and hazelnut with a lightly syrupy body.

At the other end, the 2011 Santa Teresa, Caturra and Yellow Catuai, was more acid-driven: lemon-and-orange citrus, fresh-cut fir and ripe tomato, with a rich, syrupy body. Variety and process move the cup here more than the department name does, so read the lot label.

How to brew it

Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention

Best fit
Pour-over
Recommended

Filter brewing keeps the floral and citrus detail of the washed lots legible while the body stays round.

Espresso
Workable

The syrupy body suits espresso, but the bright acidity noted in several lots can turn sharp if the shot runs short.

French press
Workable

Immersion plays up the rich mouthfeel, at the cost of some floral clarity.

⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for Central American washed and natural lots, not an SCA-defined standard.

Nueva Segovia's range comes from one farm's lot page (Finca Un Regalo de Dios, Mozonte), so treat it as indicative, not a department-wide measurement. Jinotega and Matagalpa reuse the ranges already published in this Atlas's own Nicaragua Jinotega and Nicaragua Matagalpa entries, shown for scale only.

Caffeine content tracks species far more than origin, altitude, or processing. This entry is Arabica; no credible per-origin caffeine figure exists at a category level, so nothing here is a measurement of this specific lot.
