Ethiopia Nekemte
Ethiopia Nekemte (Lekempti), the high-altitude western Oromia coffee from the Wollega Zone, with a sourced flavor profile and real citations.
Flavor profile
avg. of 2 published reviewsScale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 2 independently published, dated Coffee Review scores of washed lots from the Nekempte District, Oromia, roasted by different companies (Papa Lin's Coffee Roasting, March 2013, rated 96; Cafe Del Mundo, June 2013, rated 94). Both are 2013 reviews of one-off lots, not a category-wide statistical sample: individual lots vary by season and producer, both are washed so natural-processed Nekemte is not represented, and the Papa Lin's lot is a Ninety Plus selection, a boutique producer that may sit above the average Nekemte cup.
What it tastes like
Nekemte is a place name doing the work of a region. The market town in western Oromia gave its name, often spelled Lekempti, to coffee from the wider Wollega Zone, which smallholders grow and send to Nekemte for export. Most lots are heirloom varieties, and roasters list both washed and natural versions (see ONA Coffee’s listing via The Way to Coffee).
It also sits high. Roaster listings put Wollega farms at 2,000-2,400 m, above the typical Yirgacheffe band, which is part of why the cup tends toward the bright and floral end. That altitude figure comes from roaster product pages rather than an official survey, so read it as a guide.
The best-documented cups are two 2013 Coffee Review lots from the Nekempte District. Papa Lin’s Ninety Plus Kemgin scored 96 with wild strawberry, dried blueberry, chocolate and flowers; Cafe Del Mundo’s Kemgin scored 94 with night-blooming flowers, vanilla and roasted cocoa nib. Both rated aroma a perfect 10, with lively, juicy acidity and a silky to syrupy mouthfeel. They are two lots from one season, so treat them as a snapshot of what a very good Nekemte can do, not a promise.
How to brew it
Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention
A paper filter keeps the floral and berry top notes clear and lets the silky body show without turning heavy.
Bright, juicy acidity can read sharp as a straight shot, so roasters tend to suggest it for those who like a fruit-forward espresso.
Full immersion adds weight, but it tends to blur the delicate floral notes that make a good lot distinct.
⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for Ethiopian lots generally; no Nekemte-specific brew-method study exists.
Altitude & region
Growing elevation, meters above sea level · this entry vs comparison bands
Ethiopia Nekemte's range is sourced from roaster listings for Wollega Zone lots (see Sources & data). Yirgacheffe, Kenya AA, and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale using the same commonly published typical ranges used elsewhere on this site, not lot-specific measurements.
Caffeine content
Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%
Caffeine content tracks species rather than origin, altitude, or processing. This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-origin caffeine figure exists at a category level, so nothing here is a measurement of this specific lot.
