Scale: 1-10, Coffee Review / SCA-classic-form convention. Averaged from 3 independently published Coffee Review scores of natural-process lots labelled Gedeo (Coffea Roasterie, December 2011; Barrington Coffee Roasting Co., April 2015; Interpretation Coffee, March 2021). All three are naturals, so washed Gedeo lots are not represented here. Single roaster lots, small N, and the oldest is over a decade old: other lots will differ.

What it tastes like

Gedeo is the zone, Yirgacheffe is the name on the bag. The Gedeo Zone sits in southern Ethiopia and contains six woredas, Yirgacheffe and Kochere among them, so a “Gedeo” label usually means a lot traced to the wider zone rather than one town, per Trabocca’s origin profile. Farmers there grow local landraces such as Kurume and Wolisho, and both washed and natural processing are common.

The three cited Coffee Review lots are all naturals, and they lean berry-sweet rather than tea-like: blueberry, strawberry and dried raspberry alongside dark chocolate and cacao nib, with honeysuckle as the floral note. Every one scores a 9 for body, a plush, syrupy mouthfeel that is the clearest difference from the lighter, tea-like washed profile.

Read the label for process before buying. A washed Gedeo lot will taste closer to the classic Yirgacheffe cup, while a natural leans toward fruit and sweetness, and the scores here describe naturals only.

How to brew it

Method fit for this origin · editorial guidance from roaster convention

Best fit
Pour-over
Recommended

Filter clarity lets the berry fruit and floral lift show without the heavier body of immersion.

Espresso
Workable

Natural lots pull sweet and fruit-forward, but bright acidity needs careful dialling in to avoid sourness.

French press
Workable

Suits the plush body the reviews describe, though full immersion softens the aromatic definition.

⚠ Fit tiers are editorial guidance drawn from roaster convention; no industry standard scores brew fit, so we show tiers, never invented numbers. Reflects brew guidance commonly published by specialty roasters for Ethiopian lots, not an SCA-defined standard.

The Gedeo range is sourced from Ethio Coffee's Yirgacheffe origin table (see Sources & data), which uses the zone's best-known trade name. Kenya AA and Brazil Cerrado are shown for scale only, using commonly published origin altitude bands, not lot-specific measurements.

Caffeine content

Caffeine by dry weight · each gold dot = 0.1%

1.2%
Arabica This coffee
~1.2% caffeine by dry weight
2.2%
Robusta
~2.2% caffeine by dry weight

Caffeine content tracks species, not origin, altitude, or processing: roughly 1.2% for Arabica versus roughly 2.2% for Robusta, close to double (see Sources & data). This entry is 100% Arabica; no credible per-origin caffeine figure exists at a category level, so the comparison is by species only, not a measurement of any specific lot.
